About this site
Materials Science Room is a site for learning materials science through multiple-choice questions. It covers crystal structures, defects and diffusion, mechanical properties, phase diagrams and heat treatment, ceramics, polymers and electronic materials, thin films, and materials characterization with SEM, TEM and XRD. No account is needed, and everything is free.

About the questions
All questions and explanations are original to this site. None are copied from other websites, books or certification exams.
Each question is written so that exactly one answer is correct, numbers come with their conditions (temperature, standard revision and so on), and rules of thumb are not stated as absolutes. We keep reviewing the content after publication and correct errors when we find them.
The English content is translated from the original Japanese. We take care to keep it accurate, but it may contain errors. If you find one, please let us know via the contact page.
How the content is made and checked
Drafts of the questions, explanations and glossary are written with the help of AI (large language models). Each draft is then checked by a separate AI that did not write it: every question is solved again to confirm that exactly one answer is correct, facts, numbers, units and terminology are checked, and calculation questions are verified with a program before publication.
The English and Traditional Chinese pages are translated from the Japanese content with AI, and a separate AI checks that numbers and formulas match the Japanese and that the standard terms of the field are used.
Errors can still remain. We correct them when we find them and keep reviewing the content.
How to use
- By topic: pick a topic on the home page and answer its questions.
- 10 random questions: ten questions drawn from all topics.
- Weak questions: retry only the questions you last got wrong.
- Mock exam: 30 questions from all topics, with explanations shown at the end.
- Weak-spot check: one question from each topic, then your accuracy by area and the topics to study next.
- Question of the day: one question each day. Answer every day to build your streak.
- Learning courses: topics arranged in a recommended order for each goal, with your progress and the next topic to study.
Your answers are stored only in your browser and can be checked on the progress page.
Who runs this site
This site is run by an individual. Its running costs are covered by advertising and affiliate (referral fee) income. Advertising and referral fees never affect the content of the questions or explanations.
